Synopsis:
Jim and Hilda Bloggs are a retired couple living out a quiet life in
the English countryside, clinging to the comforting certainties of a
Britain that no longer exists. When war with the Soviet Union is
announced, Jim follows the government's official pamphlets to the
letter - building a lean-to shelter, stockpiling supplies, going
through the motions of "duck and cover" - convinced that, as in the
last war, keeping calm and carrying on will see them through. It
won't. Adapted from Raymond Briggs' 1982 graphic novel, the film
slides from gentle, hand-drawn domestic comedy into a quiet,
devastating account of nuclear apocalypse, all without ever leaving
Jim and Hilda's cottage.

About this restoration:

The source is the 2021 iNTERNAL-GUACAMOL 1080p BluRay encode
(1440x1080, x264, 4:3). It was put through two AI passes and
re-encoded to bring it up to a clean 1440p presentation while
preserving the original 4:3 frame and the soft, painterly,
watercolour-and-crayon look of Briggs' artwork.

Pass 1 .............: Starlight Mini
Noise reduction and detail cleanup applied to
the 1440x1080 BluRay source, softening residual
x264 blocking and compression artifacts ahead
of upscaling.

Pass 2 .............: Gaia 2 - Upscale to 1440p
AI-based upscaling from the 1440x1080 BluRay
source to 1920x1440, preserving the original
4:3 aspect ratio and the fragile, hand-painted
texture of the backgrounds.

Pass 3 .............: H.265 Encoding (NVENC)
Encoded to H.265/HEVC (Main 10, 10-bit) with
hevc_nvenc at ~7325 kb/s average.
Color space: BT.709 (TV range)
Audio: source DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and AAC
LC 2.0 tracks carried through untouched.
Subtitles: English SDH and Dutch text tracks
added; original English/German/German PGS
tracks carried over from the BluRay.

The result is a cleaner, steadier version of the 2021 BluRay release,
now upscaled to 1440p - without losing the delicate, hand-painted
softness that makes the film's second half so quietly devastating.
